Vowels and Consonants in English

We have 26 letters in English which form the entire language and literatures. We mainly divided these 26 letters in English Grammar to two major parts as vowel and consonants letter. The differentiations are based upon the vocal sound of these letters.

In this lesson we will discuss the difference between vowel and consonant and their qualities.

What is Vowel?

From 26 letters there are only 5 letters which is called vowels in English Grammar.

A E I O U

Vowel pronunciation has a connection with speaking style, when we pronounce vowel there is no blockage between teeth, tongue and lips. The air go flawlessly from out mouth when we pronounce A, E, I, O, U.

What is Consonant?

If we let out above five vowels from 26 letters there would be remain twenty-one letters. Compare to vowel these letters are blocking air flow either with teeth, tongue and lips.
