Elements of Sentence in English Grammar

In our previous lessons we learned about the types of sentences in English grammar, based on the structures there are some of the major elements of sentence in English Grammar which is essential to understand.

अपने पिछले पाठों में हमने English Grammar में वाक्यों के प्रकारों के बारे में सीखा, structures के आधार पर English Grammar में वाक्य के कुछ प्रमुख element हैं जिन्हें समझना आवश्यक है।

As we know a Sentence is a collection of words in grammatical order with specific meaning and significance, but these groups of words are further classified as ‘Elements of Sentence in English Grammar’.

Elements of Sentence in English Grammar

Here are some of the major Elements of Sentence in English Grammar which are listed below. Read the article and attempt quizzes for better clarity.

Subject

A word or the part of a sentence which identifies the person or things that the sentences or we talking about are called Subject. Mainly subject is one who is doing work.

एक शब्द, या वाक्यों का भाग जो किसी व्यक्ति या वस्तु को पहचानता है, जिसके बारे में बात किया जा रहा हो, Subject कहलाता है| Subject काम को करने वाला होता है|

If someone is saying about others for something:

Kohli is a great player.
Prabhu Deva is a great dancer.
If someone is doing something:
Kohli has scored a century in the match.
Prabhu Deva is choreographing in this movie.

In the above examples, Kohli and Prabhu Deva are subject in both sentences.

Predicate

The part of sentences which tells something about subjects, these group of words may contain verb and adjective of subjects.

वाक्यों का वह भाग जो Subjects के बारे में कुछ बताता है, इन शब्दों के समूह में Subjects के Verb और Adjectives हो सकते हैं।

Kohli is a great player.
Prabhu Deva is a director also.

Here in the above sentence, Kohli is Subject, and ‘is a great player.’ is the predicate of the Sentence. Likewise, ‘Prabhu Deva’ is the Subject, and ‘is a director also.’ is the predicate of the sentence.

Note: Sometimes in commending sentences (Imperative Sentence), the subjects are hidden and it can be just understood.

Go there. (Here ‘You’ is silent, and can be understood.)
Switch off the T.V. (Here ‘You’ is silent, and can be understood.)

Object

If a subject does something for any person or thing than that person or things are considered Objects.

यदि कोई subject किसी व्यक्ति या चीज के लिए कुछ करता है तो उस व्यक्ति या चीजों को उस subject का object माना जाता है।

Read the Below sentences and understand objects.

We are eating mangoes.
My Father bought a new T.V.

In the above example, ‘Mangoes’ is the object of the verb ‘Eating’ doing by subject ‘We’. Similarly, ‘New T.V.’ is the object of the verb ‘bought’ done by subject ‘My Father’.

Note: Sometimes a verb and subject has more than one object in the sentence.

Read the below sentences and understand objects.

My Father bought a new T.V. for our new home.
Rajat gave me his notes for revision.

In the above example, ‘New T.V.’ and ‘New Home’ are two objects, similarly in the second example, ‘Me’ and ‘Notes’ are two objects.

Complements

A complement is a word or a word group which shows the adjective of the given subject or describes the noun or pronoun.

एक complement एक शब्द या एक शब्दसमूह है जो दिए गए subject के Adjective को दर्शाता है या संज्ञा या सर्वनाम का वर्णन करता है।

Read below sentence and understand objects.

This book is mine.
I am busy today.
She is very intelligent.
Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India.

In the above examples, ‘Mine’, ‘Busy’, ‘Intelligent’, and ‘First Prime Minister of India’ are the complements of sentences.
